The race to build the perfect digital sidekick has reached a new phase, with major tech firms vying for user attention in a crowded market. To compete in this shifting landscape, Anthropic has officially introduced Claude Duet, a new application designed to rival established players like Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo.
Unlike many of its competitors that focus heavily on personal errands, Anthropic is positioning Duet specifically for professionals and small business owners. The company emphasizes that this agent is built to automate and manage work-related tasks rather than handling personal chores like booking tickets or running errands. Anthropic notes that Duet cannot show users its real-time browser activity, a feature found in some other personal agents, signaling a clear distinction in its intended use case.
Instead of managing personal schedules, Duet focuses on professional productivity. It can generate daily briefings, construct data dashboards, and suggest specific actions based on a user’s existing data. Like other modern agents, Duet operates within its own virtual machine, allowing it to complete tasks in the background while the user continues with their day. It will only interrupt the user if it requires approval to proceed with a specific step.
This launch reflects a broader trend in the AI industry, where the focus is shifting from simple conversational assistants to autonomous agents that can act on a user's behalf. Many of Anthropic’s competitors are also pivoting toward business applications. For instance, while Meta’s Muse serves as a personal assistant, the company has also released a version tailored for small businesses with deep app integrations. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots has a strong business orientation, featuring connections to various professional tools.
A key feature of Claude Duet is its proactive nature. The agent monitors ongoing tasks and delivers recommendations without waiting to be asked. It is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model and integrates with more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This wide range of integrations allows the agent to interact with a variety of external services and platforms.
The application can also handle financial transactions on behalf of the user. It supports online purchases through Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. However, Anthropic has set clear boundaries to maintain user control. Sensitive steps, such as making payments, require explicit user approval. The agent is not authorized to trade securities or move money between different accounts, ensuring that financial control remains largely with the human user.
To address privacy concerns, Anthropic has introduced a new classifier system. This tool checks each message to prevent sensitive information from leaking out through the agent. By default, Duet is configured to turn down requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification numbers. This proactive approach to data security aims to build trust among users who are sharing professional data with an AI system.
Claude Duet is currently available as a mobile app on both iOS and Android platforms. It is also accessible via the web through Claude.ai. The application is currently in research preview, meaning it is available for testing before a full public release. Access is restricted to Pro and Max customers who must join a waitlist to try the new features. This phased rollout allows Anthropic to gather feedback and refine the agent’s capabilities before expanding availability to a wider audience.
The introduction of Claude Duet marks a significant step for Anthropic in the consumer and small business sector. By focusing on professional workflows and integrating a robust security framework, the company is attempting to carve out a distinct niche in the AI agent market. As the technology matures, the ability to seamlessly blend background automation with secure, proactive assistance will likely determine which of these new tools gains a loyal following among working professionals.
